Tween Night Out: Ages 9-13: May 31st

Want a date night or some time to yourself but don’t know what to do with your tween? We have you covered!

Once a month, we invite Tweens (ages 9-13) to join us for an evening of jewelry projects and pizza with other like-minded tweens. Not only will students gain new jewelry-making skills, they will also gain confidence by working in a safe and supportive environment. 

This particular class is not only experiential but educational as instructor Jen Barnhart will teach students about different types of gemstones and where they are found in the U.S. and beyond.  Then students will select their favorite gemstone and bake a terrarium pendant and gemstone beaded earrings.

After working with gemstones, we will break for dinner and enjoy Ghost Box Pizza in the gallery classroom. We'll finish the night in our metals classroom where we will learn how to create a resist to make custom two-toned copper earrings with liver of sulfur.

At the end of class, students will have completed a terrarium pendant, gemstone hoop earrings, and copper two-toned earrings.

We will cover: 

• Studio safety and ergonomics
• Different types of gemstones, their properties, and sources
• How to create a terrarium pendant
• Beading basics for earrings
• Intro to working with metal
• Learning how copper reacts to certain patinas
• Learning about resists with metal
• Working with non-toxic copper patina (Liver of Sulfur)
• how to seal and care for metal after patina

Class Duration: 3 hours, Friday, May 31st from 6:00-9:00 p.m. with a 30-minute break for dinner.
